In March 2013, 40 leading experts from across the world gathered at a workshop, hosted by the European Commission, Directorate General Joint Research Centre, Italy, to discuss the multiple benefits of soil carbon as part of a Rapid Assessment Process (RAP) project commissioned by Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE). This collaboration led to the publication of the SCOPE Series Volume 71 "Soil Carbon: Science, Management and Policy for Multiple Benefits"; which brings together the essential scientific evidence and policy opportunities regarding the global importance of soil carbon. This short communication summarises the key messages of the assessment including research and policy implications. |

This study has the objective of selecting tree species adapted to the local environmental conditions with potential for multiple purpose use as components of agroforestry systems and for reclamation of degraded areas. The experiment was established in the Experimental Station of the Agroforestry Research Center of Acre-EMBRAPA-CPAF/ACRE, with 12 native and introduced species, with 1,50m spacement within rows and within plants. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with five replications. Each species was represented with 20 plants/replication. The evaluation 12 months after planting showed that: a) All species presented survival rates above 80% with exception of Cedrela odorata (73%), Aspidosperma sp. (66%) and Spondias sp. (64%); b) growth in total hight was superior in Leucaena leucocephala and Acacia mangium with an average hegiht above 2,80m, folIowed by Erythrina fusca with 2,00 and Gliricidia sepium with 1,65m; c) basal stem growth was higher in E. fusca, an average 7,13cm, followed by Erythrina berteroana, A. mangium and Erythrina poeppigiana, with basal diameters above 4,20cm; d) crown diameter was higher in A. mangium, L.leucocephala and E. fusca reaching 1,40m, while G.sepium and E.berteroana reached a crown diameter above 1,00m. These results show the good adaptation of the introduced species and their superior performance when compared with the native species in establishment potencial and initial growth.
